It's tight and 3750s aren't really DC switches in Cisco's estimation. You can do 3 meter stackwise cables and essentially leapfrog every other rack to keep the loop closed. And being only 6" tall, the whole rack-top cable-tray system will fit under almost any ceiling height. Then I can use different lenth cable from the patch panel to the server depending on what's needed. Once that goes in the cable between the patch panel on the server rack and the patch panel on the switch rack is tucked away in the floor/ceiling and never touched again. The best thing I've thought of so far is some sort of patch panel in each rack. I just need a nice neat way to get the cable there. I can't justify the expense when the existing hardware has plenty of 1 gig ports. Our switch has the port capacity, so putting a small switch in each rack and running an uplink over 1 or more 10 gig connections isn't an option. How do you handle getting Cat 5E (or I guess Cat 6) from your servers to the core switch? Just straight cable runs in the ceiling/under the floor? Patch panels? Or something else?īasically I want to find a better way to go from the NICs in the server to the core switch.
